Toxicities: Cholinergics vs Anticholinergics

A

Cholinergics = “SLUDGE”
= Salivation, Lacrimation, Urination, Diaphoresis, GI distress, Emesis

Anticholinergics - think about normal fxs but excessive
= Increased IOP** + blindness, Urinary retention, Flushed skin, Altered LOC**

Seldenafil and the other “-fils”
- Contraindications?

A

“-fils” for BPH/Erectile dysfunction - VASODILATORY effect
S/e = Blue discoloration of vision + Priapism (painful erection for > 6 hrs)

DO NOT TAKE WITH:
= Alpha Adrenergic antagonists (“-zosin”)
= Angina (within 24-48 hrs of Nitrate)

  1. Alpha receptor blockers (TamsulOSIN, DoxazOSIN) - relaxes prostate muscle + bladder neck
    = orthostatic hypotension
  2. Alpha Reductase inhibitor (FINASTRIDE) - reduces prostate size (hormonally)

- Considerations of admin?

A

For Osteoporosis (decreases bone resorption/breakdown)

  • Take on empty stomach / 30 minutes before other drugs
  • Full glass of water
  • Upright for 30 mins to help w/ absorption + minimize esophageal irritation
