Drug Action Flashcards
what are the 4 main modes of drug action?
- activating or blocking receptors
- opening or blocking ion channels
- activating or blocking enzyme function
- facilitation or blocking of transport systems
is drug/receptor interaction enough?
NO!
what is meant by affinity?
the tightness of the drug binding to the receptor
what is meant by occupancy?
how much time the drug spends on the receptor
what is meant by efficacy?
how effective the drug is at producing a response from the receptor
what occurs when the drug concentration is higher?
more receptors are occupied at any time therefor more response achieved
what is an agonist?
binds to a receptor and causes an effect
how is a partial agonist different?
more difficult to produce the drug/receptor effect than with normal agonist
how can drugs change enzyme action?
- substrate antagonism
* non-competitive substrate inhibition
is substrate antagonism competitive or non-competitive?
competitive
