Interval

A
  • Interval is the distance between your vehicle and those in front or behind you.
  • Stay at least three seconds behind the car in front.
  • Increase interval with higher speeds, poor weather conditions, road conditions and heavier traffic

Backing/ Hook and Look

A
  • The simple rule of backing is to look out the back window glancing side or front if necessary.
  • Steering in reverse is different.
  • The rear of the car will go in the same direction as the wheel is turned.
  • The front end will swing in the opposite direction.

Signals

A
  • Signal a minimum of 300 feet in advance of your turn.
  • This distance is lengthed by poor road and weather conditions, higher speeds, heavier traffic or small interval behind.
  • A good place to signal is at the warning sign describing the intersection because people follow associate the sign with the signal.

Turn Lanes

A

Turn lanes are to separate turning and thru traffic

Steps for using turn lanes:

  1. Identify its presence and exact location as soon as possible
  2. Enter the turn lane as soon as it is available
  3. Do as much of your breaking as possible in the turn lane
  4. Keep to the shoulder side

Glance Techniques

A
  • Using this technique permits you to safely make all necessary checks.
  • Make two or even three glances as opposed to one long stare.
  • Every other glance is to the road ahead.
  • Make glance check so that you can see everything

  • Plan ahead

Braking

A
  • Plan you’re breaking and give yourself room to use them and in a smooth fashion
  • Apply steady ,not jerky, pressure to the brakes
  • Increased pressure slightly as you need it
  • Smooth out final stop by taking a small amount of pedal pressure off just before you stop
  • Certain situations oh cause you to cover the break, which means that you have your foot on the break but not necessarily using it

  • This prevents over steering which in turn requires more corrections
  • When turning use hand-over-hand steering to turn and recover

  • Make a mirror check when you alter your speed, direction or when you see something potentially dangerous developing ahead
  • You should check your mirrors approximately every 10 seconds during normal driving
  • Use your side mirrors to see where you cannot
