Flat Tire

- Hold onto the steering wheel
- Slow down gradually
- Pull off the road

A
- Keep a strong grip on the steering wheel

Gas Pedal Sticks
A
- Keep eyes on the road
- Quickly shift to neutral
- Pull off to the road
- Turn off the engine

Headlight Failure
A
- Try the headlight switch a few times
- If that doesn’t work, put on emergency flashers/turn signals/ fog lights
- Pull off of the road (Hang something out the window)

Car is on Fire
A
- Get off road
- If no chemical fire extinguisher, use dirt or sand
- If fire gets out of control, move at least 30 yards away from the vehicle as the gas tank may explode

Stalling on Railroad Tracks
A
- Look for trains. If none, restart your car. If it doesn’t restart move far away from it
- If you can put your car in neutral and push it off the tracks
- If there’s a train coming, get off the tracks. Run in the general direction the train is coming from, so the debris from the collision won’t hit you

ABS
A
Antilock Braking System; allows you to stop without skidding

With ABS
A
- Press on the brake as hard as you can and keep pressing
* Do not let up on the brake. The ABS will only work when your pressing down. It may feel like it’s pushing back

Without ABS
A
- Car will skid if you brake to hard
- Apply the brake as hard as you can without locking them
- If brake locks, the car will skid. Quickly let up on the brake

Running off the Pavement
A
- Don’t Panic
- Brake Carefully
- Take foot off the accelerator
- Grip the steering wheel tightly
- Wait until your car has slowed down and turn back onto the road
