Mood disorders in the DSM-5 are classified into what two broad categories
Unipolar and bipolar
Involves a change in mood in the direction of depression
Depressive disorder
periods of depression cycling with periods of mania
bipolar
Is often referred. to as the “common cold” of mental disorders because it is. so prevalent (cost $60 billions a year USA)
MDD-Major depressive disorder
A distinct period of elevated, expansive, or irritable mood that lasts at least one week and is accompanied by at least three associated symptoms.
Mania (Bipolar Mood Disorder)
Is a less severe form of mania that involves a similar number of symptoms, but those symptoms need to be present for only four days
Hypomania
Less severe form of bipolar disorder involving a history of at least two years of alternating hypomanic episodes and episodes of depression that do not meet the full criteria for major depression.
cyclothymia
Characterized by recurrent depressive episodes generally tied to the changing seasons.
Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
lead to negative moods-
- all or nothing thinking
- Overgeneralization
- Magnification (catastrophizing)
- jumping to conclusions (interpret things negatively)
cognitive distortions
Hypothetical structures in the mind that contain care beliefs about the self, the world and the future (cognitive triad).
Schemas
the tendency to actively seek out criticism and other negative interpersonal feedback (risk factor in depression)
negative feedback seeking (Interpersonal models)
the tendency to repeatedly seek assurance about one’s worth and lovability from others
excessive reassurance seeking (interpersonal models)
