Donor tingling of the tongue/limbs
in apheresis procedures citrate effect, citrate anticoagulant bind free calcium causes oral tingling, tetany and arrthymias. Slow the rate of flow and provide oral calcium
Donation interval for single platelets
at least two days in between, no more than two procedures a week or 24 per year
Donation interval for apheresis double/triple products
7 days in between donation
Donor is on aspirin
Cannot donate platelets for 48 hours
Donor is on clopidogrel or ticlopidine
cannot donate platelets for 14 days
Donor hyperventilation
signs and symptoms, short of breath, facial twitching, response to treat, rigid fingers with rebreathing-the paper bag thing
Hypovolemic shock
exremely uncommon, tachycardia with hypotension, loss of consciousness, shock parameters, treatment is IV fluids and possibly retransfuse blood
