Blood Collection Flashcards
Quality Assurance
system designed and implemented to ensure that manufacturing is consistently performed in such a way as to yield a product of consistent quality
Quality Control
determine through particular testing or observation if a process or task within a process is working at a given time
CFR requires blood centers to obtain donor’s written acknowledgement of following elements:
- donor reviewed educational material regarding relevant TTI 2. Donor agrees not to donate if donation could cause potential harm to recipient 3. a sample fo donor blood will be tested 4. If donor’s blood is unsuitable they will be labeled in system as ineligible for future donation. 5. provided info about risks and hazards of specific donation procedure
Information must be repeated to donor’s for plasmapheresis with what time distance between donations
6 months
Where do you put the DIN number prior to starting donation
On blood donor record, sample tubes and primary and satellite containers
antecubital fossa
location of needle stick (inside elbow hinge) devoid of any scars
Even when decontaminating with iodine, how can bacteria get into blood unit
bacteria present deep beneath the skin layers can not be decontaminated and could cause contamination
Diversion pouch
AABB requires diversion pouch- reduces platelet plug components containing viable bacteria, approx. 50mL
Average collection time for 1 500mL unit of blood
<10 minutes
AABB standards allow for how much blood to be collected per individual
10.5 mL/Kg
How much is the average unit volume
450 (+/- 1-%) 500 (+/- 10%)
Density of WB
1.053 g/ml
BV collected calculation
grams (weight of bag)/ specific gravity (1.053 g/mL)
Temp, B.P. Pulse, Age and weight requirement for donating
greater than or equal to 37.5C/99.5F, b.p. 90-180 systolic, 50-100 diastolic, pulse 50-100 bpm, 16-17 is minimum depending on state, must weigh 50kg or 110 lb, can be adjusted but the donation volume must be adjusted
hgb/hct donor requirement
women: >/=12.5 g/dL/38% Men: >/+13g/dL/39% Autologous: >/=11g/dL/33%
aDHQ
abbreviated donor history questionnaire- for frequent donors, eliminates questions about events/behaviors that were previously answered no to- would not need to be asked again
DHQ
donor history questionairre , the basic DHG is accepted by the FDA but you can add additional questions based of your area and time frames can be more restrictive
CMS
centers for medicare and medicaid services- requires laboratories to be certified under clia
CLIA
clinical laboratory improvements ammendment, regulates all laboratory testing done on humans in the US through CLIA (CMS takes care of this)
AABB
voluntary agency for inspection and accreditation, meets requirements of CMS and CLIA, standards for blood banks and transfusion services
FDA
regulates donor screening, Code of federal regulations CFR Title 21. CLIA regulations are found in Title 42 CFR 493, guidance documents memorandum to industry
CAP
voluntary agency for inspection/adccreditation, meets requirement of CMS and CLIA
MMR shot/VZV shot deferrel
4 weeks (because of Rubella) Measles and Mups (2 weeks)
Flu shot deferral
no deferral
HBIG
only given with exposure to hepatitis therefore 12 month deferral period
Toxoids or synthetic/ killed vaccines
no deferral
Polio oral vaccine
2 week deferral
Yellow fever, Oral typhoid deferral
2 weeks
unlicensed vaccines
12 months
small pox
14-21 days, or until scab off
polio or typhoid injection
no deferral because of inactivated organism
Drugs- 2 day deferral
aspirin, aspirin contained products, Proxicam
Proxicam
used to reduce swelling and pain in joints for arthiritis- 2 day deferral
Drugs 7 days deferrral
Prasugrel (Effient), Ticagrelor (Brilinta)
Prasugrel
(Effient) anti-platelet drug that prevents platelets from aggregating -7 day deferral
Ticagrelor
(Brilinta) block platelets from sticking together- 7 day deferral
14 day drug deferral
Plavix, (clopinagrel) , Ticlid, (Ticlopidine) Zontivity (Vorapaxar)
Plavix
Plavix (clopidogrel) prevents platelets in your blood from sticking together to form an unwanted blood clot that could block an artery. Plavix is used to lower your risk of having a stroke, blood clot, or serious heart problem after you’ve had a heart attack, severe chest pain (angina), or circulation problem
Ticlid
Ticlopidine (trade name Ticlid) is an antiplatelet drug in the thienopyridine family which is an adenosine diphosphate (ADP) receptor inhibitor. Research initially showed that it was useful for preventing strokes and coronary stent occlusions
Zontivity
Vorapaxar is used to help prevent heart attacks and strokes in people who have had a heart attack or have poor blood flow (peripheral arterial disease). It works by blocking certain blood cells called platelets from sticking together and forming harmful blood clots
Which units have higher viral rates, volunteer or directed
Directed
Tegison
used for patients with psoriasis, has associations with birth defects, this is a permanent deferral
Platelet count of a unit must be above what
3 x 10^11
Betadine
sterlization technique for donor collection
