Divisions of the Nervous System Flashcards
sensory receptors gather information
Sensory Input
interprets sensory input and decides what should be done
Integration
activates effector organs to cause a response
Motor output
brain and spinal cord
Central Nervous System (CNS)
nerves, ganglia, sensory receptors, and motor endings that lie outside of the brain and spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
nerve fibers (axons) that convey impulses TO the CNS from sensory receptors
Sensory (afferent) division
transmits impulses FROM the CNS to effector organs (muscles and glands)
Motor (efferent) division
provides the motor innervation of skeletal muscles
Somatic (voluntary) nervous system
innervates cardiac and smooth muscles and glands
Autonomic (involuntary) nervous system
