2.6 Inorganic Compounds Flashcards
does not contain carbon
Ex. Water, salts, many acids and bases
Inorganic compounds
substance that conducts an electrical current in a solution
Electrolyte
substance that releases hydrogen ions when in a solution
Acid (proton donor)
substance capable of binding with hydrogen ions
Base (proton accepter)
the measure of acidity or alkalinity
pH units
displacement reaction that mixes an acid and a base to form salt and water
Neutralization reaction
chemical substance that minimizes changes in pH by releasing or binding hydrogen ions
Buffer
acids that dissociate completely and irreversibly in water
Strong acids
acids that do not dissociate completely
Weak acids
dissociate easily in water and quickly tie up H+
Strong bases
ionizes incompletely and reversibly; accepts few protons
Weak base
chemical system that helps maintain pH homeostasis of the blood
Carbonic acid-bicarbonite system
