3.1 Cells Flashcards
the basic structural and functional unit of living organisms
Cell
outer membrane of the cell; acts as a selective barrier
Plasma membrane
intracellular fluid packed with organelles
Cytoplasm
small structures that perform specific cell functions
Organelles
organelle that controls cellular activities; usually near the center
Nucleus
What are the 3 parts of a human cell?
Plasma membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus
substances contributing to body mass that are found outside the cells
Extracellular materials
important transport and dissolving media
ex. interstitial fluid (fluid between the cells), blood plasma, and cerebrospinal fluid
Body fluids/extracellular fluids
substances that aid in digestion (ex. intestinal and gastric fluids) and act as lubricants (ex. saliva, mucus, serous fluids)
Cellular secretions
secreted by the cells, these molecules self-assemble into organized mesh and serve as “cell glue” to hold body cells together; abundant in cell tissues
Extracellular matrix
