What is workplace diversity
Acceptance and inclusion of individuals from all backgrounds and groups with protected characteristics
What are some advantages of a diverse team
a. More skills
b. More creativity
c. More cultural awareness
What is meant by the term unconscious bias
Assumptions based on race, gender and diability based on stereotypes
e.g. women not being able to attend after work activities due to childcare
What are inclusive environments
a. An inclusive environment recognises and accommodates differences in the way people use the built environment
b. It facilitates dignified, equal and intuitive use by everyone
c. Goes beyond meeting minimum standards or legislative requirements
This can include useable ramps, sufficient lifts and functioning disabled toilets
What is the RICS’ stance on D&I
RICS’ Rules of Conduct (Number 4) require RICS-regulated firms and members to encourage diversity and inclusion.
The profession needs to attract and retain the best talent, regardless of gender, race, disability, neurodiversity, class or socioeconomic background, religion, sexual orientation or age.
What recommendation was made in regards to the Lord Bichard review
Give much greater priority to diversity and inclusion in both the profession and the Institution itself
Recommendation - A Diversity and Inclusion Panel should be established to provide advice to the RICS Board and Standards and Regulation Board.
