Q

Explain why perceptions of inner city areas have changed over time (6)

A

In the Victorian era, Inner city areas used to be perceived as dangerous, overcrowded, unhygienic and poor living conditions.

As the centuries moved by, the perceptions of inner cities varied.

It was still known to have a dense population however some parts of the city were designed for the wealthy elite (e.g. Mayfair and Knightsbridge) where it remains desirable, aesthetically pleasing and perceived to be high quality of living.

In 21st century, regeneration of inner cities increased and living costs were inflated (e.g. rent) therefore forcing residents out into commuter belts and rural urban fringe (e.g. Slough and Watford) where the social life was better and housing prices were cheaper yet had easy access to inner cities.

Perceptions of ethnicities have varied too, in the victorian era London had a predominantly white population but due to globalisation in the current century there has been more migration and a variation of ethnicities - mixed culture.
