Diuretics Flashcards
What do Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors do?
Inhibit carbonic anhydrase in proximal tubule.
2. Prevents sodium absorption
What is the use of Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors?
Open angle glaucoma
What is the side effect of acetazolamide?
Metabolic acidosis
Name the Loop Diuretics
Furosemide and Bumetanide
What transporter do Loop Diuretics inhibit?
Na-K-2Cl transporter
How much Sodium is inhibited in Loop Diuretics? What is excreted?
- 20-25% of sodium is inhibited
- Increased excretion of K, Ca and Mg
- Decreased uric acid excretion
- Increased RBF
What is Furosemide used for?
Edema, Hypercalcemia
What are the side effects of Furosemide?
Volume depletion, Hypokalemia, and Alkalosis
Name he Thiazide-like drugs
Hydrocholorthiazide and Metolazone
What do the Thiazide-like drugs do?
Inhibit Na-Cl symport in distal tubule
How much sodium do thiazides inhibit? What is excreted? What is saved?
- Inhibits 5% of sodium
- Excretes K and Mg
- Decreases Ca and uric acid excretion
- GFR decreases
What are Thiazides used for?
Hypertension, CHF and Hypercalciuria
What are adverse effects of Thiazides?
Hypokalemia, Hyperglycemia and Hyperuricemia
What does Potassium-Sparing Diuretics do?
Inhibit renal epithelial sodium channels in collecting ducts.
Name two Potassium-Sparing Diuretics
Amiloride and Triamterene
