Registrar - intubated a very sick child- difficult intubation- resp arrest. Asystole & could not be resuscitated.
Counselling & support
Emotions -
Distress, self criticism, blaming others, feeling she wants to quit.
Listen, Allow Reg to express grief/anger
Establish facts - let reg tell her story
Issues to commend ( you were right to call me or u followed failed intubation drill)
Give reassurance ( particularly competence), Explain that unduly self critical feelings r unjustified
THIS MUST HAVE BEEN HORRIBLE
TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED
U MUST REMEMBER WN PATIENTS THIS SICK IT OFTEN TURNS OUT BADLY WHATEVER U DO.
I’M NOT CONVINCED THAT DIFFICULTY WITH INTUBATION WAS REALLY A MAJOR FACTOR
I KNOW U CAN INTUBATE. I’V SEEN U DO LOT OF TIMES
I WILL COME WITH U TO TALK TO THE FAMILY.
