Disffusion / Osmlsis Flashcards

1
Q

What is diffusion?

A

• the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
• this net movement occurs until no difference in concentration exist between different areas

Q

What is osmosis?

A

• takes place when there is a net movement of water molecules that move from high concentration to low concentration

Q

What is hypertonic?

A

• describe the solution with higher solute concentration. If a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, it results in the net movement of water out of the cell (lots of solutes)

Q

Condensation/dehydration vs. hydrolysis

A

Condensation:
• when two molecules are joined to inform a larger molecule following the removal of water

Hydrolysis:
• which is a chemical compound is broken down by reaction with water
