Disffusion / Osmlsis Flashcards
What is diffusion?
• the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
• this net movement occurs until no difference in concentration exist between different areas
What is osmosis?
• takes place when there is a net movement of water molecules that move from high concentration to low concentration
What is hypertonic?
• describe the solution with higher solute concentration. If a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, it results in the net movement of water out of the cell (lots of solutes)
What is isotonic?
• indicates the equal solute concentration for both solutions
What is facilitated diffusion?
• substances move from high to low concentrations/through a protein/no energy
What is a concentration gradient?
• higher probability of moving from the left to the right (high to low)
Condensation/dehydration vs. hydrolysis
Condensation:
• when two molecules are joined to inform a larger molecule following the removal of water
Hydrolysis:
• which is a chemical compound is broken down by reaction with water
