Diseases of the Skin Flashcards
Common follicular disorder affecting susceptible hair follicles, most commonly found on the face, neck, and upper trunk
Acne Vulgaris
Inflammatory response result from the action of certain skin bacteria
Acne Vulgaris
Causative agent: Acne Vulgaris
Propionibacterium acnes
Characterized by comedones (primary acne lesions), both closed and open, and by papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts
Acne Vulgaris
This condition is common in puberty
Acne Vulgaris
It is considered an abnormal response to normal levels of testosterone
Acne Vulgaris
Medical management: Acne Vulgaris
- Nutrition and Hygiene Therapy
- Topical Pharmacological Therapy
- Systemic Pharmacologic Therapy
Management: Acne Vulgaris
Topical Pharmacologic Therapy
Benzoyl Peroxide
Topical Antibiotics
Depress sebum production and promote breakdown of comedo plugs
Benzoyl Peroxide
Suppress the growth of P. acnes; reduce superficial free fatty acid levels; decrease comedones, papules, and pustules
Topical Antibiotics
Management: Acne Vulgaris
Topical Pharmacologic Therapy
Common Topical preparations
Tetracycline
Clindamycin
Erythromycin
Management: Acne Vulgaris
Systemic Pharmacologic Therapy
Oral Antibiotics
Oral Retinoids
Estrogen Therapy
Management: Acne Vulgaris
Systemic Pharmacologic Therapy
Examples of Oral Antibiotics
Tetracycline
Doxycycline
Minocycline
Reduces sebaceous gland size and inhibits sebum production
Synthetic Vitamin A compounds (Oral retinoids)
Suppresses sebum production and reduce skin oilness
Estrogen Therapy
Freezing with liquid nitrogen; may be used for nodular and cystic forms of acne
Cryosugery
For patients with deep scars, in which the epidermis and some superficial dermis are removed down to the level of the scars
Deep Abrasive Therapy (Dermabrasion)
Acute inflammation spreading to surrounding dermis
Furuncle
An acute inflammation arising deep in one or more hair follicles and spreading into the surrounding dermis
Furuncle
Refers to multiple or recurrent lesions
Furunculosis
Abscess of skin and subcutaneous tissue that represents an extension of a furuncle that has invaded follicles and is large and deep seated
Carbuncle
Causative agent: Furuncle and Carbuncle
Staphylococci
Management: Furuncle and Carbuncle
Warm, moist compresses increase vascularization and hasten resolution
Surrounding skin may be cleaned gently with antibacterial soap, and an antibacterial ointment may be applied
Can also cause inflammation of the joints
Psoriasis
