Disease Flashcards
1
Q
what is a pathogen?
A
an organism that causes disease
e. g.
- bacteria
- viruses
- fungi
- protoctists
2
Q
describe bacteria
A
- prokaryotic organisms
- no nucleus
- microscopic and unicellular
3
Q
name a useful bacteria
A
Lactobacillus bulgaricus
4
Q
what shape is lactobacillus bulgarius?
A
rod shaped
5
Q
what does lactobacillus do?
A
feed on lactose sugar in milk and produce lactic acid
6
Q
what does harmful bacteria do?
A
cause infections
7
Q
name a harmful bacteria and what it causes.
A
pneumococcus - causes pneumonia - spherical
8
Q
describe viruses
A
- non living
- parasitic - they can only reproduce by invading living cells
- they infect all living organisms
9
Q
how do viruses reproduce?
A
- the virus sticks to a cell membrane
- the virus enters the cell, the protein coat breaks down and releases DNA
- the viral DNA directs the cell to make new protein coats
- the cell membrane breaks down to release the new viruses
10
Q
what is the influenza virus?
A
- infects animal cells
- in humans it infects cells in the nose and throat
- causes flu
11
Q
what is the HIV virus?
A
- infects white blood cells in humans
- as a result the white blood cells can’t fight other diseases
- HIV can cause AIDs
12
Q
what is the tobacco mosaic virus?
A
- infects leaf cells of tobacco plants
- infected cells can’t make chloroplasts
- causes discoloured leaves
- can kill the plants
13
Q
what is an antigen?
A
- microbes have chemicals on their surfaces called antigens
- each type of microbe has a different antigen
- lymphocytes make antibodies specific to the antigen on the invading microbe
14
Q
do white blood cells have haemoglobin?
A
no
