discussion questions for ch 4 Flashcards
how to define and judge a variable
event, situation, behavior or individual characteristic that varies
any variable must have two or more levels or values (extraversion/intoversion)
we measure them through operational definition (it ust have this to be studied empirically)
operation definition of a variable
set of procedures used to measure or manipulate variable
construct validity
sees if operational definition is measuring waht it intends to measure
What do different values of the Pearson correlation coefficient, r, mean?
measures strength of a linear relationship between two variables
a perfect positive linear relationship is r=1
no relationship
0-0.05
weak relationship
0.1-0.3
moderate relationship
0.3-0.5
strong relationship
more than 0.5
more often-more than 0.7
Curvilinear relationship
is a type of relationship between two variables where as one variable increases, so does the other variable, but only up to a certain point, after which, as one variable continues to increase, the other decreases.
