Sudden often unforeseen event that threatens health or safety
Emergency
A public emergency that necessitating assistance from outside the affected community
Disaster
An infection that spreads rapidly around the world. Ex. H1N1, Ebola
Pandemic
The act of making plans to prevent, respond to and recover from emergencies.
*CDC recommends an all hazards approach
Emergency preparedness
Four phases of emergency response
Preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery
Prioritizing victims for treatment based on severity of illness or injury and in light of the supplies and resources available.
*object of triage is to ensure early assessment of clients and prioritize clients based on severity of symptoms
Triage
Immediate
*critically injured with problems that will require immediate intervention to correct.
ex. pt will respirations >30, if below 30 check circulatory status by cap refill if it takes more than 2 seconds tag them red, if below 2 then assess mental status
RED
Delayed
* injured and will require some medical attention, but they will not die if care is delayed while you care for other people.
*Not ambulatory need a stretcher for transport
*ex. pt’s that can follow simple commands such as hand grips are tagged as yellow, pt’s that can’t follow simple commands are red
YELLOW
Ambulatory or minor
Not critically injured and can walk and care for themselves
* ex. Have pt walk to a safe place, but do not lose track of them
GREEN
Deceased or have such catastrophic injuries that they are not expected to survive to be transported.
*ex. if the client is not breathing, open the airway manually, if they remain apneic tag them black if they begin breathing, they are tagged red.
BLACK
*The site of disaster where a weapon was released or where the contamination occurred.
*Only personnel with appropriate personal protective equipment may enter this zone
access to this zone : fire, police, military personnel will collect evidence and begin their investigation in the hot zone
Hot Zone
integrated strategy for disaster management that focuses on the common features of all disasters, regardless of the cause or origin

the intentional release of biological agents to create illness and death in humans, animals, and the environment. Modes of transportation include air, water, and food
