medial or sagittal plane
splits body verticaly into left and right sides
horizontal or transverse
divides body into supirior and inferior sections and runs horizontaly
the frontal or coronal plane

Superior
uppermost, above, or toward the head
Inferior
lowermost, below, or toward the feet
Cephalic (cranial)
toward the head
Caudal
toward the lower part of the body
Anterior (ventral)
situated in the front. It also means on the front or forward part of an oregan
Posterior (dorsal)
situated in the back. It also means on the back part of an organ
Proximal
situated nearest the midline or begining of a body structure
distal
situated farthest from the midline or begining of a body structure
Medial
the direction toward, or nearest, the midline
Lateral
The direction toward, or nearer, the side of the body, away from the midline
cavities
a space within the body that contains and protects internal organs and other body structures
cranial cavity
contains the brain. cranial means skull
spinal cavity
located within the spinal column, it surrounds and protects the spinal cord
Thoracic cavity(chest cavity or thorax)
surrounds and protects the heart and lungs
abdominal cavity
contains the major organs of digestion
pelvic cavity
space formed by the hip bones. contains organs of the reproductive and urinary system
