Where is the mouth and what is its function?
Where is the tongue and what is it’s function?
In the mouth
Where are teeth and what are their function?
The teeth are located in the mouth
- they physical digest food
- turn food into bolus
What is the epiglottus?
The flap of tissue that stops food from going down the trachea
What is the esophagus?
The pipe after your throat that passes food down to the stomach
What is the pharynx?
Passageway for food and air
(Throat)
Trachea + epiglottus
(first part of throat that connect main things togteher)
What is the larynx?
first part of the trachea
(allows air to pass down)
The voicebox
Where is the stomach and what does it do?
- Located after esophagus
- chemical digestion
What is the pyloric sphincter?
Musuclar contractions at end of the stomach
tense= blocks acid chyme
relax= acid chyme goes into duodenum
What is the small intestine?
long tube that absorbs nutrients from chyme
absorbs: 4 biomolecule groups
carbohydrates, nucleic acids, lipids, proteins
What are the 3 parts of the small intestine?
- Duodenum
- Jejunum
- ileum
What is the function of the duodenum?
receive food from stomach to absorb nutrients with help from liver, gall bladder and pancreas
what is the function of the jejunum?
main place to absorb nutrients like carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and minerals
What is the function of the ileum?
to finalize absorption and empty waste into large intestine
absorbs any leftover nutrients
does the small intestnie have peristalsis?
Yes it helps move chyme down the tube
also plays role in mehcnaicl digestion
what are villi?
finger like projections thta increase surface area
small intestine
what are capillary beds?
they absorb amino acids, glucose and nucleotides
what is the ilieo-caeval valve?
sphincter thta contolrs chyme going into large intestine
What is the pancreas and its role?
scretes hormones to manoitain blood sugar and aids in digestion
pancreas endocrine
blood sugar levels
what is insulin?
sproduced by pancrea and lowers blood sugar levels
sotrage by conversion of glycogne by the lliver
what is glucagon?
hormone produced by pancreas to raise blood sugar
pancreas exocrine?
helps in digestion
what examples pancreatic juice?
- water
- sodiumbicarbonate
- lipase
- trypsin
- nucleases
- pancreatic amylase
