Lipids Flashcards
what is a lipid?
non polar energy molecules that are hydrophobic
hydrophpbic cause there is no charge wanting to mix with h2o
what is a fatty acid?
- the monomer of a lipid
- chain of carbon and hydrogen
-inlcudes carboxylic end
what is a carboxylic end?
the end of a molecule with COOH
what is a saturated fatty acid?
one with no double bonds
solid at room temperature (produced by animals)
what is an unsaturated fatty acid?
- one with double bond
- hydrogen on same side (bent molecule)
liquid in room temperature (produced by animals)
Transfat
- double bonds
- hydrogen on opposite sides (straight molecule)
solid room temp (animal produced)
what is a neutral fat?
Glycerol plus one or more fatty acids
formed by dehydration synthesis
what does a triglyceride include?
- one glycerol
- 3 fatty acids
what functions do glycerides provide?
- energy supply/storage
- insulation for temp changes
what is a phospholipid?
variation of neutral fat with a glyceride and one fatty acid replaced with a phosphate group
is phospholipid polar or non polar
both
polar: on the phosphate
N-polar: on the glycerol + fatty acids
is the phosphate of a phospholipid hydrophbic or philic?
Hydrophilic because it’s polar
it will accept other H2O’s
Is the Non-p tail of a phospholipid philic or phobic
Hydrophobic
no charges looking for other molecules
what is a steroid?
a variation of neutral fat
How are neutral fats formed?
Dehydration synthesis
what is the structure of a steroid
- non polar ring
ex. hormones, cholesterol
