Protein synthesis 2 Flashcards
1
Q
What is the second step of protein synthesis?
A
Translation
2
Q
What is Translation?
A
mRNA is made into a protein
3
Q
What are the 3 steps in translation?
A
- Initiation
- Elongation
- Termination
4
Q
What happens during Initiation?
A
- mRNA arrives at ribosome and aligns with it
- Start codon (AUG)
5
Q
What happens during Elongation?
A
- tRNA transports amino acids to ribosome
- anti codons attatch to codons
- polypeptide bonds between amino acids form
- tRNA returns to cytoplasm (get another AA)
Amino acids go into correct sequence to build protein
6
Q
What happens in Termination?
A
Process continues until stop codon occurs
(tRNA does not carry amino acid)
7
Q
What are ribosomes made of?
A
RNA (Ribosomal rna)
8
Q
How many codons can be on a risbosome at once?
A
3 codons
(only translates one at a time)
9
Q
what is a post translational modificaiton after translation?
A
Protein folding
10
Q
What are the 3 types of RNA in protein synthesis
A
- rna transcript
- mRNA
- tRNA
