Water Flashcards
What are water’s characteristics?
Polar, Covalent and Inorganic
What does polar mean?
An unequal electron sharing within a covalent molecule.
Adhesion
Molecules sticking to the wall/Side
Cohesion
Molecules sticking to eachother
What does being colvalent mean?
A Bond where electrons are shared
How is water Polar?
Oxygen is more electronoegative and therefore has a sroinger negative charge. The hydrogens are positive which therefore means the electrons in the bond are pulled more toward oxyegn.
Dipoles appear and water develops charge
what are 2 things water is good for?
- good solvent for polar molecules
- breaking down inionic compounds (dissociating)
What functions does water have in the body?
- transporting ions in blood
- regulating body temperature
How does water help with body temperature regulation?
more water=more blood flow= widening blood vessels=energy realeased
perspiration=sweating
How does adhesion help in the body?
sticks to the cell wall
and transport’s water through bloos vessels
how does Cohesion help in the body?
It allows water to travel through blood cells easier
What is a hydrogen bond?
When H ions bond with
1. Nitrogen
2. Oxygen
3. Fluorine
and then bonds with another of the same molecule
(hydrogen is attracted to a negative force caused by dipoles)
Why is water a good solvent?
it’s polar shape allows molecules to be broken down easier due to diffrence in attraction forces
How do hydrogen bonds form between water moelcules?
The H ions from one are attracted to the O ions from another
