pH Flashcards
What is the pH scale?
A scale from 0-14
(0-7=acidic) (7-14=basic)
7=neutral
What is an acid?
- has lots of hydrogen
- lowers pH
ex. Hydrochloric acid (HCl)
What is a Base?
- has OH ions
- raises pH by recuding H ions
What does pH measure?
the amount of hydrogen
p=potential
H=hydrogen
Where in the body can you find a basic enviorment?
Blood ~ 7.4 pH
Small intestine ~8.4 pH
Where in the body can you find an acidic enviorment?
The stomach
What is a fucntion of acid in the stomach?
aids in digestion of proteins
Changes shape of enzymes active site so it no longer fits the substrate
What is an enzyme?
- A catalyst for chemical reactions in the body
- a protein that helps speed up metabolism
- must be kept at ideal pH or a structure change will occur
(catalyst for essential processes in the body)
How does an Enzyme work?
An enzymes active sight accepts “substrates” which are then turned into products
What is a buffer?
It picks up or realeses hydrogen/hydroxyde to maintain “Homeostatis”
Homeostatis= body process to keep it steady and always adjsuting
Why is it important ot maintain pH?
- human body places have diff pH
- if pH changes enzymes will change shape
- Affects funciton of tissues and organs
- death or severe illness
What does denaturing mean?
Denaturing is the process of changing enzymes shapes reulting in them unable to funciton
they change shape through temperature
