Diabetes Flashcards
What is type 1 diabetes
The immune system attacks the B cells in the islets of langerhans so don’t produce any insulin.
Blood glucose stays high
What is hyperglycaemia
Blood glucose rise and stay high
Why does hyperglycaemia mean there is glucose in urine
Kidneys can’t réabsorb all of the extra glucose
How is type 1 treated
Insulin therapy Regular injection of insulin or an insulin pump to provide a steady dose Carefully monitored Controlling carbohydrate intake Regular exercise
What is hypoglycaemia
Blood glucose levels get too low
What is type 2
B cells don’t produce enough insulin or the body cells don’t respond properly to the insulin because insulin receptors on cell membranes don’t work so cells don’t take up enough glucose
What are risk factors of having type 2
Lack of exercise
Poor diet
Age
Family history
How is type 2 treated
Eating healthy
Lose weight
Exercise
Insulin injections
What causes type 1
Genetic predisposition
