Development of the periodic table Flashcards
When did work start on the periodic table?
Work Started in the 1800s (19th century)
How often were scientists initially finding elements?
Scientists finding elements every year, looking for patterns to organise them
Name the three scientists that did work on the early periodic table
Dalton, Newlands, Mendeleev were involved in the early development of the table
How did Dalton order the elements?
Dalton arranged the elements in order of atomic weight
How did Newlands order the elements?
Newlands arranged elements in order of atomic weight also, but noticed that there were similar properties every eighth element – law of octaves
What was a problem with Newlands work?
Newlands did not leave gaps for new elements – so his table only worked for first few rows up to calcium.
How did Mendeleev order the elements?
Mendeleev ordered elements in order of atomic weight also
Mendeleev also put the elements in regular occurring patterns of properties
Mendeleev left gaps for elements that had not been discovered
Mendeleev used his table to predict the properties of undiscovered elements
Mendeleev changed the order of elements when they were discovered to keep elements with similar properties in the same group
How are elements grouped together in the modern periodic table?
Periodic table arranges the elements in an order in which similar elements are grouped together with regularly repeating patterns of the properties of the elements
In their periodic tables, Newlands and Mendeleev arranged the elements in order of ______
In their periodic tables, Newlands and Mendeleev arranged the elements in order of atomic weight
Name the particle that allowed elements to be arranged in order of their atomic number in the modern periodic table
proton

which has the lowest boiling point
If an element has a low boiling point, then it means that at room temperature it is probably a gas.
Answer: Fluorine
