Detailed Study - Mortars Flashcards

1
Q

How does the Fuze PD M935 (sq or DLY) operate?

A
  • rotating slotted shaft is adjusted
  • pull wire is removed
  • on firing, acceleration moves setback pin rearward, freeing ball detent which frees spring loaded firing pin
  • creep forward partially releases detonator slider
  • second firing pin ignites the delay element for 2-6 seconds
  • burning pin from slider is moved which arms the PD or delay.
  • on impact, firing pin functions PD or DLY det, which functions the main fill

Q

How does M734 function during flight

A
  • air ingested through venturies to power turbine generating electricity
  • turbine also drives mechanical gear train which retracts second lock.
  • predetermined amount of spins before arming, 100m min mechanical arming distance
  • electronics monitor V and F and provide fuze with an electrical function delay
  • On release of second rotar lock, rotor rotates 180 degrees into armed position
  • the fuze is now armed

Q

Prx, NSB IMP and DLY use what type of detonators?

A

PRX, NSB and IMP all use electric det

DLY uses only mechanical with no electric circuitry. serves as a back up to the electric fuzes

operating temp and storage temp

A

operating temp -46 to 63

Storgae -51 to 71

18
Q

60mm M888

at what height would HE M888 be unservicable if dropped

A

1m

19
Q

60mm M722A1 WP

how are the fuzes M734 and M783 related?

A

M734 have all 4 options available (Prox, NSB, IMP and DEL)
M783 have the option of all 4 but is purely mechanical (IMP and Delay)
Intended for tactical training but can be used operationally.

Fill the blank

Operators using the Cart 60mm WP M722A1 in training or combat at temperatures near
(__)or below should be aware of an increased likelihood of duds or UXOs, or delay backup functions when firing at charge 0.

A

-31

21
Q

60mm M722A1 WP

How does the mortar round operate

A

Mortar Operation. M722A1 is loaded fin-end first into the mortar barrel.
The ignition cartridge functions and ignites the propelling charge.
Combustion gasesfrom the ignition cartridge and propelling charges propel the cartridge out of the barrel. On impact, the fuze functions.
The fuze initiates the burster charge. The burster charge ruptures the shell and disperses the WP filler. The WP
produces smoke upon exposure to the air.

22
Q

60mm M722A1 WP

If set to PRX what fuze setting will the fuze default to?

A

IMP

23
Q

CARTRIDGE 60MM FULL RANGE PRACTICE ROUND

What should you be aware of if the packing clip is not seen or a red band on the striker is visible

A

Force applied to the nose of an armed fuze can result in
ignition of propelling charge. Do not attempt to fire a M769 with an armed fuze.
Remove cartridge for disposal without striking nose of fuze.
