All forms of depression are characterised by changes of the mood. These are the latest categories of depression:
* Major depressive disorder (severe, short term)
* Persistent depressive disorder (long term)
* Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder ( children’s tantrums)
* Premenstrual dysphoric repression ( mood changes before or during period)

- Lethargic from low energy levels has a knock on effect with work
- Can be so severe to keep people restricted to bed
- Can lead to opposite effect, psychomotor agitation
- Lead to pacing up and down a room
disruption to sleep and eating behaviour

- Can experience reduced sleep (insomnia), particularly premature waking, or an increased need for sleep (hypersomnia)
- Appetite and eating may increase or decrease leading to weight gain or loss
- Behaviours are disrupted by depression

- Can be directed against the self
- Suicidal thoughts

- Can be quite extreme with some people with depression describing a sense of self loathing
