denial
conscious refusal to perceive that painful facts exist
ex: denial about someone’s death
repression
the exclusion of distressing memories, thoughts, or feelings from the conscious mind
ex: repressing sexual assault and never dealing with it
reaction formation
unwanted reaction to something that is the opposite of what you actually feel
ex: a man who is insecure about his masculinity Acts overly aggressive to those around him
projection
when unwanted feelings are presented towards another person
ex: mother who is insecure about her body projects those feelings onto her daughter and tells the daughter insulting things about her own body
rationalization
afe and reasonable explanation for the true cause of behavior
ex: person was stood up on a date so they convince themselves that they didn’t like the other person anyways
displacement
placing your anger or frustration onto someone else
ex:guy angry at his boss takes it out on his family
identification
making yourself like someone else and identifying with them
ex: son copying mannerisms of his father
sublimation
channeling emotions into a productive outlet
ex: going to the gym whenever you’ve had a stressful day at work
insight therapy
verbal interactions with the therapist that are supposed to increase the client’s self-knowledge and promote healthful changes personality and behavior
free association
clients spontaneously express their thoughts and feelings exactly as they occur, with as little censorship as possible
dream analysis
The therapist interprets the symbolic meaning of the clients dreams
manifest content (dream analysis)
The plot of the dream at a surface level. What specifically a person is dreaming about

interpretation
Refers to the therapists attempts to explain the inner significance of clients thoughts, feelings, memories, and behaviors
resistance
largely unconscious defensive maneuvers by the patient intended to hinder the progress of therapy. (anger, changing the subject, being late, not showing up, etc.)
