MCPA - where does it belong & its mechanism of action
MCPAis one of the most frequently used herbicides in many countries. It belongs to derivates of pheenoxy acid & is used as a herbicide and algicide.
MECHANISM OF ACTION : inhibition of ribonuclease synthesis, uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation and demyelination of peripheral nerves
CLINICAL SIGNS : fatigue, vomitus, diarrhoea, anorexia, tremors, ataxia, hyperventilation, hypoxemia. Higher dose –> stiffness of leg muscles, paralysis & coma
THERAPY : supportive and symptomatic
Determination of phenols & cresols
a) Steam Distillation :
i. Test with ferric chloride (FeCl3)
1. Yellow -> negative
2. Blue -> presence of phenols
3. Blue-green -> presence of cresols
4. Red -> presence of acetic acid
ii. Test with Millon’s reagent –> pink/red (positive result)
