A
absence of hopes and dreams and a disruption of the family unit

how does an infant view the concept of death?
A
- little to no concept of death
- egocentric thinking which prevents understanding of death
- mirror parental emotions

A

- magical thinking –> child feels guilt and sham e
- views dying as temporary and does not see death as permanent

how does a school age child view the concept of death?
A
- begins to have adult concept of death around 9 years of age
- experiences fear which if often displayed through uncooperative behaviors

what does palliative care focus on?
A
- focuses on comfort measures but physical care still comes first
- provide an environment as close to home as possible and encourage parents to remain with patient
- respect cultural/religious preferences

what are manifestations of death?
A
- body feels cool
- swallowing difficulties
- loss of bowel + bladder control
- cheyne stokes respirations
- loss of sense–> hearing goes last

how can the nurse play a role with a patient who is dying?
A
nurses can attend the patient’s funeral and can maintain contact with the family
