the uprisings then spread across SA- in response lots of students leave SA to train as guerrillas
1980 Jan
3 guerrillas shot dead in a bank in Pretoria
a British Sport Council team begins a tour of SA to investigate racial discrimination in sport
1980 March
campaign launched for the release of Mandela
supported by AZAPO, Natal Indian Congress and SACC
1980 April
18th - Zimbabwe gains independence
1980 June
1st - MK strike at Sasol Complex, causing damage estimated at R66 million
1981 Jan
30st - South African Army raids Mozambique and assassinates 12 ANC members
1982 March
Mandela, Sisulu and others are transferred to Pollsmoor prison
speculated that this was to remove their influence on the young prisoners on Robben Island
1983 Aug
20th - UDF formed, containing 3 million members
a powerful force in the internal anti-apartheid struggle
1985 Feb
Botha offers to free Mandela if he rejects violence as a political weapon
he replied “what freedom am I being offered while the organisation of the people remains banned”

Stevie Wonder dedicates his Oscar for the song “I just called to say I love you” to Mandela
his music then banned in SA

Mandela 70th Bday Tribute concert in london
it was a focal point of the external anti-apartheid movement

President PW Botha suffers a stroke and is replaced by De Klerk
1990 Feb
2nd - Mandela and other prisoners released
ANC unbanned

4th - negotiations between ANC and government begin
