IM
INDICATION:
For active immunization against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis as a 5-dose series in infants and children 6 weeks to 7 years of age
– Try to use same DTaP brand for each dose
DOSE:
0.5 mL
OF DOSES:
5 doses
FREQUENCY:
- Give at 2 mo, 4 mo, 6 mo, 15-18 mo, 4-6 yr
- ONLY give DTaP/DT to children < 7 yo
- Try to use same brand product for each dose
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
A) Severe allergic reaction (e.g. anaphylaxis) after a previous dose or to a vaccine component
B) Encephalopathy not attributable to an identifiable cause, within 7 days of previous DTaP dose
PRECAUTIONS:
A) Moderate or severe acute illness with or without fever
B) History of arthus reaction following a prior dose of tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine
C) Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) within 6 wks after previous dose of tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine
D) Progressive or unstable neurologic disorder, uncontrolled seizures, or progressive encephalopathy until a treatment regimen has been established and the condition has stabilized
E) Any of these events following a previous dose of DTP/DTaP:
– Within 48 hrs: >=105 temp, continuous crying >3 hrs, collapse/shock-like state
– Within 3 days: seizure
ADVERSE REACTIONS:
Adverse reactions by dose number (mostly accurate):
- Systemic: 1 - 3
- Fever, fussiness/irritability, inconsolable crying, & decreased activity/lethargy
- Systemic: 1 - 3
- Injection Site: 4 & 5
- Tenderness, redness, and increase in arm circumference
- Injection Site: 4 & 5
