INDICATION:
For active booster immunization for the prevention of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis as a single dose:
Adacel: 11 to 64 yo
Boostrix: 10 to 64 yo
DOSE:
0.5 mL
OF DOSES:
1 dose
FREQUENCY:
Give Tdap routinely at age 11–12 years
Vaccinate older teens and adults on a catch‐up basis. Everybody should have 1 dose of Tdap which can be given regardless of interval since previous Td.
Then boost everybody every 10 years with Td.
Notes:
– Make special efforts to give Tdap to 1) children and teens who are in contact with infants younger than age 12 months and 2) healthcare workers with direct patient contact.
Pregnancy:
- Health-care personnel should administer a dose of Tdap during each pregnancy irrespective of the patient’s prior history of receiving Tdap.
- To maximize the maternal antibody response and passive antibody transfer to the infant, optimal timing for Tdap administration is between 27 and 36 weeks gestation.
- For women not previously vaccinated with Tdap, if Tdap is not administered during pregnancy, Tdap should be administered immediately postpartum.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
A) Severe allergic reaction (e.g. anaphylaxis) after a previous dose or to a vaccine component
B) Encephalopathy not attributable to an identifiable cause, within 7 days of previous DTaP dose
PRECAUTIONS:
A) Moderate or severe acute illness with or without fever
B) History of arthus reaction following a prior dose of tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine
C) Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) within 6 wks after previous dose of tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine
D) Progressive or unstable neurologic disorder, uncontrolled seizures, or progressive encephalopathy until a treatment regimen has been established and the condition has stabilized
E) Syringes = possible latex
ADVERSE REACTIONS:
Injection Site: pain, swelling, erythema
Systemic: headache, body ache/muscle weakness, and tiredness
