D6: Functions of the skeletal system Flashcards
what are the 6 different functions of the skeletal system?
-Supporting framework
-Protection
-Attachment
-Store nutrients
-Source of blood cell production
-Movement
How to remember the 6 functions of the skeletal system?
SPASSM
explain the support the skeletal system provides?
-Support and weight bearing
-Vertebrae column gives us posture and helps us keep upright
-Limbs help with balance
how does the skeletal system provide protection?
-Our bone our strong and help us protect vital organs
-Calcium helps us grow our bones
-Our skeleton is designed to prevent injury
How does the skeletal system provide attachment?
-Bones provide attachment for muscles/tendons-when a muscles contracts the bone moves
-Bones also attach by joints providing a range of movement
-Tendons attach to bony landmark sites for attachment
what are the 2 main attachment sites?
-origin and insertion
whats meant by origin?
-attachment for less moveable bone
whats meant by insertion?
attachment for more moveable bones
how does the skeletal system produce a source of blood cells?
-all blood cells are produced in red bone marrow
-bones that contain marrow are pelvis, sternum, vertebrae, clavicle
how does the skeletal system provide storage of minerals?
-minerals are needed to carry out bodily functions like thinking and breathing
-we store calcium, phosphorus and magnesium
how does the skeletal system provide movement?
-uses levers
-muscles will pull on bone for movement
whats a lever?
a long bone connected to a joint
