D2: Bone remodelling Flashcards
what is the process of bone remodelling called?
ossification
what is ossification?
the remodelling of a bone which helps lay down new bone cells and material.
what are osteoclasts responsible for?
dissolving calcium and breaking old bone
what are osteoblasts responsible for?
responsible for replacing collagen and building new bone
where do osteoblasts originate?
bone marrow
what are osteocytes?
mature osteoblasts that stay to form bone structure
what is the epiphyseal?
-hyaline cartilage that is at the end of each bone
what happens to the epiphyseal line as the bone matures?
the plate grows further up the bones as cartilage is turned into bone
what are the 3 types of cells used during ossification?
-osteoclasts
-osteoblasts
-osteocytes
what are bones made up of as a feutus?
cartilage
where does primary ossification happen?
-mostly in the shaft/diaphysis
explain what happens during primary ossification
-osteoblasts work in the shaft of the bone to turn cartilage into bone
where does secondary ossification happen?
mostly in the epiphysis around the epiphyseal line
explain what happens during secondary ossification
osteoblasts mainly work in the epiphysis to turn cartilage into bone until its just the epiphyseal plate and articular cartilage left
