it doesn’t contain all of its original features
it is limited to tour guides and parts aren’t accessible due to uni students
how is durham castle being preserved
it is a museum with a full time curator who preserves historical artefacts
restoration work is ongoing in the tunstall chapel
many rooms are still used for original functions - eg kitchens and great hall
landscape is still the same so it is clear why castle built here still
how does durham castle look different to originally
changed radically and often os it is hard to imagine and understand how it looked in each period
different layers of history are built on top of eachother on one site
curators have to rely on multiple pieces of evidence that don’t agree
the keep rebuilt in 1840 and is a victorian interpretation of a norman keep and was adapted for student accommodation
some original features don’t look like they did originally as they have been painted eg norman chapel white with different colours and now its sandstone
only original feature still there is motte
