cytogen (genetic screening) Flashcards
a tool used to identify individuals who are at a higher risk of developing a particular disorder who carry a specific gene for disorder
genetic screening
2 different types of genetic screening
Carrier Screening
Prenatal Screening
screens healthy adults for genetic conditions that they may pass on to their children
Carrier Screening
can be done before or during pregnancy
fragile x syndrome
cystic fibrosis
sickle cell disease
tay-sachs disease
a child needs to inherit one copy of the mutated gene from each parent
cystic fibrosis
a genetic abnormality on the x chromosome that leads to mild to moderate intellectual disability and behavior problems
fragile x syndrome
a group of hemoglobin-related blood disorders typically inherited
Sickle Cell Disease
a rare, inherited disorder that is characterized neurological problems caused by the death of nerve cells in your child’s brain and spinal cord
Tay-Sachs Disease
screens a pregnant woman for chromosomal abnormalities and other defects in the fetus
Prenatal Screening
birth defects of the brain, spine or spinal cord that happen in fetus is within the first month of pregnancy
Neural Tube Defects
a condition that occurs when the spine and spinal cord don’t form properly
Spina Bifida
a birth that is fatal and results in the lack of brain and skull development
Anencephaly
