CVD Causes Flashcards
Aneurysm
The artery is narrowed due to the deposition of cholesterol causing the plaque . The artery is bulges due to the walls being put under high pressure than usual so it becomes weakened it may split open causing massive internal bleeding
A weakened bulging area of the artery walls that result from the build up of plaque leading to massive internal bleeding
Hypertension (high blood pressure)
The arteries been narrowed due to the plaque on the walls causing high blood pressure
EX
Kidneys —> proteins may be forced out of nephron
Eyes —> damage to tiny vessel of retina -> if blocked or leaked the retinal cells are starved of oxygen and die causing blindness
Bleeding —> in the brain —> stroke
Angina
Narrowing of the arteries due to the plaque deposited on the endothelium of the arteries and reduce blood flow to the cardiac muscle , thus educing the supply of oxygen that the cardiac muscle receives through the coronary artery
The heart tissue now has to use anaerobic respiration causing the build up of lactic acid
Chest pains and can extend to the arm (particularly the left arm)
Treatment
- regular exercise
Using drug that cause rapid dilation of coronary heart disease
-using stent help hold it open and allow blood to pass through freely
Myocardial infarction
Caused by when atherosclerosis leads to the formation of blood clot (coronary thrombosis) = rapidly block the whole vessel of coronary artery
Deprives the cardiac muscle of oxygen so the heart is unable to contract and dies
Severe chest pains
Treatment
Giving two aspirin tablets (help stop blood clotting )
Stroke
An event caused by an interruption to the normal blood supply to the area of the brain which may be due tothe bleeding from damaged capillaries or blockage cutting off the blood supply to the brain usually caused by a blood clot
- bleeding of damaged capillaries
- blockage from blood clot/atheroma (atherosclerosis)
Dizziness
Confusion
Slurred speech
Numbness
Severe =paralysis
