What is a Grapheme?
alphabet letters
What is a phoneme?
speech sounds
What is IPA?
International Phonetic Alphabet
What is an allograph?
letter or letters that represent the same sound
What is an allophone?
variant production of a phoneme
What are cognate pairs?
two sounds that differ only by voicing (e.g. /t/ and /d/)
What are minimal pairs?
pairs of words that vary by only one phoneme in the same word position(e.g., cook/book and passed/last)
What is an open syllable?
syllable with a vowel sound in the final position
What is a closed syllable?
syllable with a consonant sound in the final position
What is an onset?
all consonants before a vowel in any syllable
What is a nucleus?
the part of a syllable with the greatest acoustic energy. usually, but not always, a vowel
What is a Coda?
Consonants that follow a vowel in any syllable, not all syllables have codas
What is homorganic consonants?
two consonants sharing the same place of articulation (e.g. /t/ and /n/)
