Cranial Nerves (Neuroanatomy III) Flashcards
How many pairs of cranial nerves are there?
12 pairs
What is CN I?
Olfactory nerve
What is CN II?
Optic nerve
What is CN III?
Oculomotor nerve
What is CN IV?
Trochlear nerve
What is CN VI?
Abducens nerve
What is CN V?
Trigeminal nerve
What is CN VII?
Facial nerve
What is CN VIII?
Vestibulocochlear nerve
What is CN IX?
Glossopharyngeal nerve
What is CN X?
Vagus Nerve
What is CN XI
Accessory nerve
What is CN XII
hypoglossal nerve
What is the function of CN I?
mediates sense of smell
What is the function of CN II?
communicates visual information to the brain
What is the function of CN III IV, and VII
these nerves control the motor functions of the eye, including eye movement, eyelid movement, and iris constriction (pupil size)
What is the function of CN V?
largest cranial nerve
motor function: innervates muscles of mastication (chewing)
sensory: transmits sensory information from the face
What is the function of CN VII?
motor function: controls the muscles of the face including:
muscles of the lips
lip elevators
muscles involved in facial expression
sensory function: carries taste sensation from the anterior two-thirds of the tongue
What is the function of CN VIII?
funciton: mediates hearing (from the cochlear nucleus) and balance (from the vestibular nucleur complex)
What is the function of the CN IX?
controls muscles involved in swallowing
provides taste and sensory input from the posterior third of the tongue
What is the function of the CN X?
function: controls the larynx, which is responsible for voice production
innervates the intrinsic laryngeal muscles
provides pain, touch, and temperature sensation from the ear drum
What is the function of the CN XI
The CN XI innervates the sternocleidomastiod muscle
What is the function of the CN XII?
innervates the intrinsic and extrinsic tongue muscles
