What’s material deprivation?
Children from w/c deprived from things such as no revision guides and laptops therefore meaning they can’t do homework
What is locality and catchment?
Areas are deprived and can’t have the same opportunity as their children can’t afford to send children to better schools e.g. bus fair and uniform
What is cultural deprivation?
Parents don’t invest time into children career
Low aspirations, family’s aren’t supportive of education at the school
Low expectations of children- JWB Douglas+ Fernstien?
If school rings parents will ignore
If parents evening occurs the m/c parents more likely to attend whereas w/c not
JWB Douglas and Fernstien criticisms?
Parents are more involved in unskilled jobs so can’t go to parents evening due to works
-Parents can’t help homework due to the fact they don’t understand
What are speech codes- Basil and Bernstein
Restricted code- The w/c speak using simple vocab, sentences slang and local dialect
Elaborate code- The m/c complex vocab, no slang, grammatically correct english (king speech)
What are the working class subcultures?
Fatalism- it is what it is
Immediate gratification- don’t care for reward later wjay it no
Present time orientation- one day at a time, bo forward planning
Collectivism- w/c engage in the same action, all them same way
What are middle class subcultures?
Optimism- have a plan for later in life
Futer time orientation- alredy think of ways to plan later on
Individulasm- don’t care about what friend are doing
Deferred gratifications- already have a plan to get a reward later on in life
