What is a CTG?

A

Cardiotocography (CTG) is a technique used to monitor the fetal heartbeat and the uterine contractions during pregnancy and labour.

What then is the purpose of a CTG?

A

Assesses foetal wellbeing (Autonomic and CNS activity) and allows to detect early signs of foetal distress

A
  • Intermittent auscultation

* Doppler US 1 minute after a contraction

What are the indications for a CTG?

A
  • Maternal health - CVS, DM, HTN, Pre-eclampsia, Pyrexia
  • Complicated pregnancy: Multiple pregnancy, oligohydramnios, antepartum or intrapartum haemorrhage
  • Complicated birth: Induction of labour, Epidural, Auscultation abnormalities
  • Foetal issues: Abnormal lie, Pre/Post-maturity, small for gestational age
