Clinical reasoning
Cognitive process that uses thinking strategies to analyze, evaluate, act
Socratic questioning
Look beneath the surface, recognize and examine assumptions, inconsistencies, points of view and beliefs
Inductive reasoning
Generalizations formed from a set of facts or observations. Several hot flames = all flames hot
Deductive reasoning
Reasoning from general premise to specific conclusion. Triangles =180 degrees. All kids love peanut butter
Nursing process
Systematic, rational method of planning and providing individualized care
Inferences
Conclusions drawn from facts: going beyond facts to make a statement about something currently not known
Judgements
Evaluation of facts or information that reflects values or other criteria; type of opinion
Opinions
Beliefs formed over time: include judgements that may fit or be erroneous
Cognitive process
Thinking processes based on the knowledge of aspects of client care
Meta cognitive processes
Reflective thinking and awareness of the skills learned by the nurse in caring for the client
Critical thinking
Process of intentional higher level thinking to define a clients problem, examine EBP, make choices
Clinical judgement
Nursing decision making process to ascertain the right nursing action to be implemented at the appropriate time in the clients care
