Cranial Nerves Flashcards
1
Q
Olfactory (I)
A
- sensory
- transmits smell
2
Q
Optic (II)
A
- sensory
- necessary for vision
- carry the sensory nerve for certain eye reflexes. Vision, PLR, dazzle reflex, menace response
3
Q
Oculomotor (III)
A
- motor
- carry motor neurone that control most muscles of the eye
- extraocular( extrinsic) ocular muscles and pupillary constrictor ( parasympathetic)
- evukate through PLRand nystagmus
4
Q
Trochlear (IV)
A
- motor
- carry motor neurone that control other muscles of the eye. Emulated through eye movement and nygastmus
5
Q
Trigeminal (v)
A
- motor and sensory
- 3 main branches :
- motor nerve to muscles of mastication
- sensory nerve to mouth and nasal cavity ( through ophthalmic, maxillary and mandibular)
- sensory nerves that carry pain sensations from the cornea. Cornea reflex
6
Q
Abducens ( VI)
A
- motor
- carry motor neurons that control other muscles of the eye
- emulated through eye movements and nystagmus
Menace response and cornea reflexes
7
Q
Facial ( VII)
A
- motor and sensory
- control the muscles responsible for facial expression
- parasympathetic innervation lacrimal and nasal secretory glands
Sensations: - taste and outer part of pinna. Menace response and palpebral reflex
8
Q
Vestibulocochlear (VII)
A
Divide to 2 parts
- cochlear nerve - responds to sound
- vestibular nerve - functions to maintain posture and balance
Emulated with normal nystagmus
9
Q
Glossopharyngeal (IX)
A
- sensory and motor control of the throat and vocal chords
10
Q
Vagus (X)
A
- provide sensory and motor control for the major internal organs, include heart and digestive tract
11
Q
Spinal accessory (XI)
A
- carry sensory and motor info for the muscles of the head and upper neck
12
Q
Hypoglossal nerves (XII)
A
- motor nerves to the Tongue
- rarely evaluted in vet practice
