Cranial Nerve Facts Flashcards
what are the components of CN III?
somatic motor and visceral motor
where are the cell bodies of CN III?
-somatic: midbrain
-visceral: presynaptic –> midbrain
postsynaptic –> ciliary ganglion
where does CN III exit the cranium?
superior orbital fissure
what is the motor function for CN III?
- innervates superior, inferior, and medial recti
- innervates inferior oblique
- innervates levator palpebrae superioris
what is the sensory innervation for CN III?
parasympathetic to sphincter pupillae and ciliary muscles that constricts pupil
what components does CN IV have?
somatic motor
where are the cell bodies for CN IV?
midbrain
where does CN VI exit the skull?
superior orbital fissure
what is the function of CN IV?
motor to superior oblique
what are the branches of CN V?
- ophthalmic (V1)
- maxillary (V2)
- mandibular (V3)
what are the components of CN V?
- somatic sensory (V1,2, &3)
- special motor (V3 only)
where are the cell bodies for CN V?
- somatic sensory: trigeminal ganglion
- special motor: pons
where does CN V1 exit the skull?
superior orbital fissure
where does CN V2 exit the skull?
foramen rotundum
where does CN V3 exit the skull?
foramen ovale
what is the function of CN V1?
sensation from cornea, skin of forehead, scalp, eyelids, nose, mucosa of nasal cavity, and paranasal sinuses
what is the function of CN V2?
sensation from skin of face over maxilla, upper lip, maxillary teeth, mucosa of nose, maxillary sinuses, & palate
what is the function of CN V3?
- sensory: skin over mandible, lower lip, mandibular teeth, temporomandibular joint, mucosa of mouth and anterior 2/3 of tongue
- motor: muscles of mastication, mylohyoid, anterior belly of digastric, tensor veli palatini, and tensor tympani
what are the components of CN VI?
