Cranial Ganglia Flashcards
What are the Motor (Parasympathetic) Ganglia?
Ciliary Ganglion
Pterygopalatine Ganglion
Submandibular Ganglion
Otic Ganglion
Peripheral Ganglia
- Remember all except Peripheral Ganglia are in the head and neck (Are in the periphery outside the CNS, containing cell bodies)
What cranial nerve supplies the Ciliary Ganglion?
Oculomotor Nerve (CN III)
What is the function of the Ciliary Ganglion?
Ciliary Body Pupillary sphincter
What cranial nerve supplies the Pterygopalatine Ganglion?
Facial Nerve (CN VII)
What is the function of Pterygopalatine Ganglion?
Lacrimal gland
What cranial nerve supplies the Submandibular ganglion?
Facial Nerve (CN VII)
What is the function of the Submandibular ganglion?
Sublingual & Submandibular glands
What cranial nerve supplies the Otic Ganglion?
Glossopharyngeal Nerve (CN IX)
What is the function of the Otic Ganglion?
Parotid Gland
What cranial nerve supplies the Peripheral Ganglia?
Vagus Nerve (CN X)
What is the function of the Peripheral Ganglia?
Heart (Just adjacent to thoracic and abdominal vicera)
What are the Sensory Ganglia?
Trigeminal (Semilunar) Ganglion
Geniculate Ganglion
Vestibular Ganglia
Spiral Ganglia
Superior (Jugular) Ganglion
Inferior (Petrosal) Ganglion
Superior Vagal Ganglion (Jugular ganglion of vagus)
Inferior Vagal Ganglion (Nodose ganglion of vagus)
(All outside of brain somewhere)
What cranial nerve supplies the Trigeminal (Semilunar) Ganglion?
Trigeminal Nerve (CN V)
What is the function of the Trigeminal (Semilunar) Ganglion?
Entire face, mouth, Teeth
What cranial nerve supplies the Geniculate Ganglion
Facial Nerve (CN VII)
What is the function of the Geniculate Ganglion
Anterior 2/3 of tongue & palate (Taste)
What is the famous virus that can affect the Trigeminal Ganglion?
Herpes Simplex I virus (Cold sores) - If lesions in the face, virus can get into nerves and hide in trigeminal ganglion
Where does the trigeminal ganglion lie?
Trigeminal fossa
What is Trigeminal Neuralgia?
Very painful facial pain. Caused by certain triggers such as touching the face which can cause pain. There is the Superior Cerebellar artery that passes by the Trigeminal ganglion that can impinge on the ganglion and cause pain, due to high BP or aneurysm. A tumor can impinge on the ganglion too
What cranial nerve supplies the Vestibular Ganglia?
Vestibulocochlear Nerve (CN VIII)
What is the function of the Vestibular Ganglia?
Equilibrium
What pair makes up the Vestibular Ganglia?
1 from semicircular canal 1 from vestibule
What cranial nerve supplies the Spiral Ganglia?
Vestibulocochlear Nerve (CN VIII)
What is the function of the Spiral Ganglia?
Audition (Inside the cochlea, hair cells etc.)
What cranial nerve supplies the Superior (Jugular) Ganglion?
Glossopharyngeal Nerve (CN IX)
What is the function of the Superior (Jugular) Ganglion?
Middle Ear Carotid Bodies & Sinus
What cranial nerve supplies the Inferior (Petrosal) Ganglion
Glossopharyngeal Nerve (CN IX)
What is the function of the Inferior (Petrosal) Ganglion?
Posterior 1/3 Tongue (Taste) External Ear
What cranial nerve supplies the Superior Vagal Ganglion?
Vagus Nerve (CN X)
What is the function of the Superior Vagal Ganglion (Jugular ganglion of vagus)?
Tympanic Membrane & Dura Mater
What cranial nerve supplies the Inferior Vagal Ganglion?
Vagus Nerve (CN X)
What is the function of the Inferior Vagal Ganglion (Nodose ganglion of vagus)?
All other sensory of vagus
