Brachial Plexus Flashcards
Where does the brachial plexus come from?
The ventral rami (C5-T1)
The brachial plexus is formed by the union of the anterior rami of the last four cervical (C5-C8) and the first thoracic (T1) nerves.
How many regions does the plexus consist of?
5
What are the 5 regions of the brachial plexus?
Roots Trunks Divisions Cords Terminal Branches
How many roots are there?
5
What are the 5 roots?
The ramus of C5 The ramus of C6 The ramus of C7 The ramus of C8 The ramus of T1
What are the 3 trunks?
Superior - from the union of the C5 and C6 roots.
Middle - a continuation of the C7 root.
Inferior - from the union of the C8 and T1 roots
How many divisions are in the brachial plexus?
6
- 3 anterior
- 3 posterior
What do the anterior divisions of the trunks supply?
The anterior flexor compartments of the upper limb.
What do the posterior divisions of the trunks supply?
The posterior extensor compartments.
How many cords are in the brachial plexus?
3
What are the 3 cords of the brachial plexus?
Lateral, Medial, Posterior
What divisions form the lateral cord?
The superior and middle trunks.
What are the divisions of the medial cord?
The anterior division of the inferior trunk continues as the medial cord.
What are the divisions that form the posterior cord?
Posterior divisions of all three trunks unite to form the posterior cord.
How many terminal branches are there?
5
Describe the formation of the brachial plexus.
The roots of the brachial plexus unite to form three trunks. Each trunk of the brachial plexus divides ino anterior and posterior divisions. The anterior and posterior divisions of the trunks form three cords. The cords divide into the terminal branches.
Where do nerves branch from?
Roots Superior Trunk Cords Terminal Branches (everything except divisions)
Where do no nerves branch from?
The Divisions
What do the divisions give rise to?
Anterior - arm flexors
Posterior - arm extendors
