Cranial Blood Supply (Internal carotid) Flashcards
When the internal common carotid enters the skull, where does it enter in reference to the foramen lacerum?
The ICC enters just above the cartilage at the foramen lacerum
What branches does the ICC give off in the cavernous sinus?
Inferior and superior hypophyseal arteries to supply the pituitary gland.
Once the ICC exits the cavernous sinus and enters the cerebral portion, does it travel anterior or posterior?
Posterior
Carotid arteries supplies which part of the brain?
Basilar arteries supplies which part of the brain?
Which artery joins the two systems?
The carotid artery supplies the anterior and middle portion.
The basilar arteries supplies the posterior portion.
The posterior communicating joins the two.
Which 2 arteries of the COW come from the basilar/vertebral arteries?
Only the posterior cerebral. The posterior communicating is technically apart of the internal carotid and connects the two systems.
Where does the anterior choroidal artery end?
Travels posteriorly from the COW and supplies the cerebral peduncle(in pons), optic tract and LGN. Ends in the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricle. CSF production depends on this blood supply.
Damage to this blood vessel could result in visual field defects because it supplies the optic tract and LGN.
Anterior cerebral artery pathway
If you split the brain in two, it runs on the anterior surface all the way down to the corpus collosum. basically the entire upper half. Extends from the front of the brain to the back, where it anastomoses with the posterior cerebral artery.
Middle cerebral artery
Runs lateral in the lateral cerebral sulcus. Branches of this supply the lateral cerebral cortex, except some that is supplied by the anterior cerebral artery, the occipital pole and inferior lateral surface.
Which is a larger terminal branch of the internal carotid? The anterior or middle cerebral artery?
Middle.
Most common artery of stroke from the ICC
Middle cerebral artery.
